Machine embroidery makes using Fiber Etch easy! The polyester embroidery thread acts like a "wall" that helps keep the Fiber Etch from spreading into unwanted areas; and working in small, well-demarcated areas gives great results without frustration.

The designs can be embroidered directly on the final design, as in the scarf above; hand appliqued for an ultra-fine look, as in the jacket above; or appliqued using your embroidery machine (see the Lantern handbag above). There are a few rules you MUST follow: Use only polyester thread in both upper and bobbin threads and do not apply Fiber Etch to natural fibers unless you want them to disappear (don't applique onto rayon, cotton, etc).

The Fiber Etch is applied, air dried and then dried in the clothes dryer until the treated velvet pile is brittle enough to be removed with your fingernail. Then the velvet is washed to remove the residual. I provide full instructions, including hooping and stabilizing suggestions, to ensure your embroidery is a success!

ABOUT THE ETCHED ELEGANCE DESIGNS. This collection is designed specifically to achieve stunning results using Fiber Etch on velvet. After experimenting with this technique in my Bernina Fashion Show design for 2007, I was hooked! However, in looking for clean, simple designs with well defined areas that would create visually interesting results after the Fiber Etch was applied, I could not find any. Thus this collection began. These designs may look boring on paper, but they really pop when used on velvet in conjunction with the Fiber Etch!

What is Fiber Etch? Fiber Etch is a chemical designed to remove cellulose fibers (cotton, rayon, etc.) while retaining protein (silk and wool) or synthetic fibers. To put this in practical terms for our purposes, the Fiber Etch removes the pile on a silk-rayon velvet while leaving the sheer silk backing; thus creating a devore or burned out velvet.

Where do you find Fiber Etch? Fiber Etch can be purchased most easily via the Internet from Silk Paint Company (the manufacturer) at http://silkpaint.com or Dharma Trading Company at http://www.dharmatrading.com.

What are some sources for Rayon/Silk velvet? Most fine fabric stores will carry rayon/silk velvet, and a good Internet source is ThaiSilks at http://www.thaisilks.com/.

Is it hard to achieve good results? Through experience I have learned that applying Fiber Etch to smaller areas makes it easier to achieve great results. Thus these designs are created to utilize small areas with the greatest impact. You can get outstanding results with no frustration!

What is included with this design set? A total of 24 designs in the format you select, 12 regular and 12 applique, along with instructions for hooping and embroidering on velvet; diagrams of recommended areas to remove the Fiber Etch and instructions with photos on applying and using the Fiber Etch. Additionally, I will be updating the website with information on how to hand applique the designs, photo examples of machine applique on silk organza and a fabulous and free scarf design!

How will I get my designs? You will receive your design set at the e-mail address you provide through the Paypal checkout. I send all orders within 24 hours of purchase, usually much sooner. If you prefer a CD mailed to you, please send me an e-mail. CDs will cost an additional $8.00 for preparation, shipping and handling fees.
